Surprisingly, the film premiered with a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that no critic gave a positive review to the movie. The audience also seems to share this opinion, giving the film a very low rating of 13%.

The negative reception isn’t entirely surprising, as the sequel’s trailer had already been criticized for changes in the animation style. Nevertheless, it’s quite rare for new films to debut with such a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The original 2010 film, Megamind, from DreamWorks, was praised for taking beloved superhero stories and tropes and creating a completely unique film.

However, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate was described as “the cinematic equivalent of reuniting with a friend you haven’t seen in many years, only to realize the reunion didn’t really need to happen,” according to a Collider critic.

Ryan Leston, an IGN critic, noted that “the original film’s extravagances have been abandoned, as well as the original cast, replaced by a rough imitation that isn’t good enough.”

Public Opinion on Megamind 2
These criticisms may seem kind when compared to the comments left by the audience. One person described the sequel as “literally the worst film of 2024,” even though only two months had passed in the year.

Adjectives like “horrible,” “trash,” and “a joke of a film” were used by viewers to describe Megamind 2.

A fan of the original film wrote, disappointedly: “This is an insult to Megamind fans who waited years or even decades for a new sequel, only to find out it’s pure garbage.”

The person continued describing their issues with the film, including “betrayal of Megamind’s original story, unnecessary casts, and horrible animations.”

The sequel also brought changes in animation, which were seen as much inferior compared to its predecessor, besides being criticized for the absence of original stars like Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and David Cross.

The film reintroduces Megamind’s old team of villains, ‘The Doom Syndicate.’ Our newly crowned blue hero must now keep up appearances of evil until he can gather his friends to stop his old evil teammates from launching Metro City to the Moon.
